Share

Hewes Middle School will be honored as one of the nation’s best public schools at ceremonies Thursday and Friday in Washington.

Hewes was selected as a 1992-93 Blue Ribbon National Distinguished School, one of 207 schools from across the country selected for excellence in school leadership, teaching, student environment, and parent and community support.

Regina Cain, the principal, and four teachers will accept the award in Washington from the U.S. Department of Education.

“We’re thrilled to receive this award,” Cain said. “This reaffirms that what we’re doing is making a difference.”

President Clinton will likely present the award at a White House ceremony Thursday, Cain said, adding that other events include a reception with members of Congress.

Six schools in Orange County have been named Blue Ribbon schools, the highest award in the nation for overall school performance. They include Brea-Olinda High School, Westminster High School and La Paz Intermediate School in Mission Viejo.

Going with Cain to Washington are teachers Diane Aust, Sue Killian, Pam Pew and Marilyn Stone.

Three years ago, two Tustin district schools--Arroyo Elementary and Helen Estock--won the national award.

As part of the review process, a team from the U.S. Department of Education visited Hewes in April and toured the campus, met with students, parents and staff, and looked at school materials and extracurricular activities.

Winners were announced in May. Cain learned of the Washington ceremony two weeks ago.

A schoolwide celebration is planned Nov. 23, Cain said.
