Two San Clemente men were charged Tuesday with six counts each of felony assault and one count each of throwing a projectile at a moving vehicle in connection with the gruesome spearing of a San Clemente teen-ager Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies had arrested four San Clemente men and five juveniles Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder in the attack, which has left 17-year-old Stephen Woods near death at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Deputies had described the assailants as gang members and gang affiliates.

But Deputy Dist. Atty. Gary Paer said Tuesday there is no evidence to support the contention that the attack was gang-related or racially motivated, adding that only one of the men charged is a gang member.

Arraignments for Juan Enriquez Alcocer, 20, and Arturo Villalobos, 20, were set for Nov. 2 in South Orange County Municipal Court.

The five juveniles are expected to be charged this week on the same seven felony counts, Paer said.

Two other San Clemente men who were arrested the day after the attack--Pascual Guerrero Bonilla, 19, and Balfred Brito, 19--were released Tuesday because of insufficient evidence.

The prognosis for Woods remains grim because the paint-roller rod, which pierced his skull almost from ear to ear, caused damage deep in the part of the brain that controls the body’s basic life-sustaining functions, doctors said Tuesday.
