Shane at Newport Beach, formerly Barbacoa, will unmask itself on Wednesday with an opening night Halloween party. The evening, which begins at 6, will include cocktails and sample dishes from Shane’s menu of American bar-and-grill-style cuisine. Entertainment is planned by Frankie Randall and his ensemble. Randall is a former piano accompanist to Frank Sinatra.

Guests are encouraged to attend in costume. Tickets are $25, and attendees may choose to donate the amount to one of two charities: Share Our Selves Medical and Dental Clinic in Costa Mesa or Young Professionals Against Cancer in Santa Ana.

For tickets, call (310) 491-1000.

Shane is at 3333 W. Coast Highway. (714) 631-0111.

A new bakery in Costa Mesa is capitalizing on the low-fat craze. Sun Flour imports its wheat from Montana, mills it daily and offers 25 varieties of fat-free bread.

The bakery, opened at the end of August by Craig and Meggan Clayton, also makes fat-free cookies, muffins and cinnamon rolls. (They have the kind with fat, too.)

The Claytons had traveled around the country, Craig explained, and had seen bakeries such as these in other parts: the Rocky Mountains, the East Coast. When his career as a commercial real estate broker bottomed out with the economy, he and Meggan decided to open a small business.

One way they’re getting the word out is to deliver baskets of bread to employers. “We want people to taste our bread,” Craig said. “It doesn’t taste like what you get in the supermarket.”

Sun Flour is open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. 427 E. 17th St. (714) 646-1440.
