GLENDALE : Calendars Feature Student Recycling Art

Share

A local businessman has donated 20,000 calendars to the Glendale Unified School District that feature student artwork about the importance of recycling.

Mark S. Ringelberg, president of Westside Metal Recycling in Glendale, said he collected $20,000 from various businesses around the community to pay printing costs for the calendar, which covers 16 months from September, 1993, through December, 1994.

A panel of judges then selected 16 pictures about recycling from nearly 1,000 district students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, Ringelberg said.

The purpose of the project was not only to educate the public about environmental concerns but to make the calendars available for schools to raise money, he said. Schools can choose to sell them for $5 a copy.

“I like to see kids get recognition for their artwork,” Ringelberg said. “It lets all these kids think about it--the environment and conservation.”

The 8 1/2-by-11-inch calendar is printed on recycled paper. The cover features artwork by Yoon Hee Hwang, a 12th-grade student at Glendale High.
