‘A, You’re Adorable . . . ‘ Aw, Better Forget It

Disney has a longstanding reputation for providing high quality, wholesome family entertainment. In describing any of Disney’s ventures, the words cute, adorable and darling are sure to be utilized. However, I must remind the executives at Disney--there is a time and place for everything.

Hockey is not cute. Nor is Stu Grimson an adorable hockey player. I am grateful for Disney having brought another professional hockey team to Southern California and developing greater interest in the sport. I am not happy, however, with watching Tinkerbell celebrate a Mighty Duck goal. I am not happy with watching the darling Decoys bring the Ice Capades to the NHL. Hockey is a fast-paced sport meant to be played by highly skilled, aggressive skaters. It is not always pretty, but it is almost always exciting.

As long as Disney makes a commitment to acquiring and keeping quality players, they will be successful. If, however, the players become secondary to selling the marketing concept of the Mighty Ducks, the novelty is sure to wear off.
