David Palmer did everything but score a touchdown Saturday, leading No. 4 Alabama to a 19-14 victory over Mississippi.

Palmer had eight catches for 76 yards and had seven rushes for 38 yards. He was directly responsible for 168 of Alabama’s 279 yards of offense, and also had five kick returns for 75 yards.

Palmer took several snaps at quarterback after Jay Barker left the game because of a shoulder injury in the second quarter and set up Alabama’s only touchdown with a 54-yard pass to Kevin Lee.

“We put Palmer in at quarterback when it felt right,” Alabama Coach Gene Stallings said. “He can make so many things happen. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen or have coached.”

Michael Proctor kicked four field goals for most of Alabama’s scoring output. He had a career-best 53-yarder, a 49-yarder and a 45-yarder.

Alabama, 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Southeastern Conference, led only 9-7 in the third quarter when Palmer threw to Lee, who caught the perfectly-placed pass over tight coverage at the Mississippi eight. Sherman Williams ran for a touchdown on the next play.

After Proctor kicked a 49-yard field goal against a stiff wind with 4:27 left, Ole Miss (4-3, 3-3) added a touchdown when Lawrence Adams threw 14 yards to Ta’Boris Fisher.

The loss snapped Ole Miss’ nine-game winning streak at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and extended Alabama’s unbeaten streak to 30 games, longest in the nation.

Barker, 23-0-1 as the Tide starter, left the game with 7:40 to play in the half after being sacked for by Rebel cornerback Johnny Dixon and 315-pound defensive tackle Tim Bowens. He never returned.

Alabama officials said Barker had a severe bruise on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. His status is uncertain for next Saturday’s game against Southern Mississippi.
