Share

A memorial service will be held Sunday for Rabbi Morton A. Bauman, who served as the spiritual leader of the San Fernando Valley’s first Reform temple for nearly 30 years. Bauman, a former longtime Tarzana resident, died Sept. 18 at a Reseda convalescent home after a lengthy illness, said a representative of Temple Beth Hillel in North Hollywood. He was 81.

Born in Detroit, Bauman attended the University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union College in Ohio, where he was ordained a rabbi. He received his doctorate from the University of Judaism in Los Angeles.

From 1937 to 1940, Bauman served as assistant rabbi and director of religious education at San Francisco’s Temple Emanu-El. During that time, he was secretary of the Board of Rabbis of Northern California and a member of the San Francisco Motion Picture Council.

On March 11, 1940, he was installed as rabbi of Temple Israel in Hollywood, where he served for two years.

During World War II, Bauman served as a chaplain in the U. S. Army. In 1949, he became the rabbi of Temple Beth Hillel, where he remained until he retired in 1977.

After his retirement at age 65, Bauman moved to Santa Cruz, where he spent the remainder of his life with his wife, June.

Bauman was a member of the State Advisory Committee on Institutional Religion, the Jewish Committee for Personal Service and the Southern California Assn. of Liberal Rabbis.

In 1962, he was appointed to the California Advisory Committee of the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights. The following year he was honored by the Los Angeles City Council for his years of service to the community.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Bauman is survived by two daughters, Hildreth (Hildy) Licht of Los Altos and Harriet Spier of Menlo Park; two sons, Philip Bauman of North Hollywood and Lew Bauman of Belmont; a brother, Emanuel Bauman of Detroit; and six grandchildren.
