More than 1,000 students from five high schools walked out of class Tuesday in support of striking teachers in the ABC Unified School District.

About 2,294 students were reported absent from Artesia, Cerritos, Richard Gahr, Tracy and Whitney high schools, officials said. In addition, 1,465 middle and elementary school students were absent in the 21,000-student district Tuesday, officials said, nearly four times the usual number.

Administrators have warned students that repeated absences will result in stiff discipline.

The student protest marked the third day of a strike by the ABC Federation of Teachers. Teachers began picketing Friday after contract talks between the district and the union broke down. On Tuesday, 389 of the 973 teachers walked picket lines, 64 fewer than the day before, according to the district.
