LOS ANGELES : City Council Raises Fees for Developers, Architects

Share

Developers and architects will have to pay 8.5% more to get their projects through the city Planning Department under new surcharges unanimously approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles City Council.

The council also approved a 1.5% surcharge on fees at the city’s Department of Building and Safety, and Bureau of Engineering.

The higher fees are expected to raise $4.7 million over five years to buy 102 computers for the Planning Department. An audit last year found that the department’s work is being impaired because its computers are outdated.

The 8.5% increase will apply to all fees levied by the Planning Department. A conditional-use permit that previously cost $2,810, for example, will be $3,049. Such permits are needed to build liquor stores, dry cleaners and drive-through restaurants, among other projects.

The charge for a zoning variance will rise from $3,680 to $3,993.
