The school district will mark the opening of Adeline Walker Elementary School today during a ceremony at the campus.

Although the school has been open to students since September, the celebration will offer the public an opportunity to tour the 42,000-square-foot campus. The new school is designed to house 800 students from kindergarten to fifth grade on a year-round schedule, said Diane Thomas, spokeswoman for the Santa Ana Unified School District.

The campus is named for a longtime community volunteer and a 1921 graduate of Santa Ana Polytechnic High School, the forerunner of Santa Ana High.

She volunteered in local schools for years teaching children how to plant and care for gardens. Walker, who was also a member of several gardening clubs, once was described as the “real heart and soul of Santa Ana,” Thomas said.

The campus sits on a six-acre site and includes two classroom buildings, a media center, administrative offices and a kindergarten. All the classrooms and the media center are linked electronically, Thomas said.

Speakers at the opening ceremony will include Richard C. Hernandez, president of the Board of Trustees, and Superintendent Rudy M. Castruita. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the school, 811 E. Bishop St., she said.
