Diamond Bar : New Buildings Dedicated

Share

A $12-million construction project that more than doubles the size of Diamond Bar High School was dedicated last week.

The project includes a 465-seat performing arts center, computer and science laboratories, new sports facilities and more than a dozen extra classrooms, said Kristian Davies, assistant principal.

The new buildings provide an extra 100,000 square feet of instructional space. Students started using some of the new facilities, including the performing arts center, last spring, Davies said.

Since 1982, enrollment at the high school has more than doubled from 1,150 students to 2,440. Some students had to be housed in portable trailers, and the choir practiced in the sewing room, administrators said.

The expansion was made possible by a $50-million bond issue approved by Walnut Valley Unified School District voters in 1991, Davies said.

Three other schools in Walnut will also benefit from the bond issue. Renovations have begun at Suzanne Middle School and Walnut High School, and new buildings are planned at South Pointe Middle School, Davies said.
