The Harbor Commission has agreed to contribute $10 million to help complete the Long Beach Convention Center expansion project, which is about $16 million over budget.

Three of the five commissioners were present this week to approve the transfer of the first $5 million check to the city. The other half will be given during the next two years.

The money was requested last month by City Manager James C. Hankla. The project, which was estimated to cost $95.5 million when construction began in June, will now cost about $111.5 million.

Commissioners voting were Joel B. Friedland, David L. Hauser and Carmen Perez. During Monday’s meeting, Hauser said he hoped it would be the last time city officials asked for funds to help with the expansion.

The Harbor Commission has already contributed $80 million to the project. Commissioners Roy Hearrean and Alex Bellehumeur were in Asia on Harbor Commission business, a spokesman said.
