Atty. Gen. Janet Reno

Share

How fitting that Atty. Gen. Janet Reno has threatened to take government action on TV violence (Oct. 21). This from the person who OKd the violent attack on David Koresh and the Waco compound. Americans should be appalled that our government leaders are wasting precious time trying to dictate what we choose to watch. How about cleaning up the streets? We have enough government in our lives without it now coming into our living room.

* I am outraged that an otherwise intelligent publication could succumb to an editorial (Oct. 21) that champions any censorship of television and motion pictures. As unfortunate and tragic as the Disney film and “Beavis and Butt-head” incidents were, we seem to forget that they were indeed rare and nowhere near the epidemic proportion of other problems suffered by today’s youth, such as teen-age pregnancy and drug abuse. Frankly, if my children were so poorly supervised and/or uneducated so as not to be able to distinguish fantasy from reality, I’d be ashamed to blame it on a movie.

If we must censor Disney movies and “Beavis and Butt-head” clips, surely we can censor the amount of attention these so-called incidents get from the news media, and thus avoid the further corruption of our “misguided youth.”

* It seems Big Sister has spoken. Reno has warned the TV industry to cut the violence or “government action will be imperative.” Government has no business in the arts and entertainment! Keep your imposed morality far from the gates of Hollywood studios.
