PRICELESS HUMOR: Vincent Price, who died this week at 82, liked to have fun with his image as the horror king of Hollywood. . . . When his wax figure was unveiled at the Movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park in 1982, Price suggested he don a gothic costume and pose as his own wax figure. When people came by, says museum manager Mark Edwards, “he would say, ‘Hello, I’m Vincent Price,’ and actually shake their hands. The screams would go out. He enjoyed this more than anyone else.”

HIGH-TECH OPERA: If you’re one of those who likes attending Chinese opera, but you don’t understand the words, the Irvine Barclay Theatre has the latest technology to help you. The theater presents shows in various languages and expects the system, donated by Bravi 9, a local arts support group, to further cross-cultural understanding.

BIKER MOVIE? “The Sound of Music: The Making of America’s Favorite Movie” by Julia Antopol Hirsch of Lake Forest chronicles one of the most popular movies of all time (E1). “It really appeals to a broad group of people,” says Hirsch. She recalls a revival of the film a few years ago. She saw two tough-looking men in leather, buckles and chains walk up to the ticket window and, after being told it was sold out, “they were just so sad because they couldn’t see it.”

A BRETHREN’S ACE: For years, Mitsubishi has been offering a new car for a hole-in-one at selected local golf tournaments. It happened this week on the 14th hole at Cypress Golf Club, during a Chamber of Commerce outing. But Corey Lyon, who scored the ace, didn’t win the Mitsubishi Galant for himself. He was playing as a member of the Brethren Christian School board, and gave it to the private Cypress school. . . . The school has a good use for it, too: It plans to sell it and put the money toward plans for a new gymnasium.
