LOS ANGELES : Sheraton Townhouse Gets 6-Month Reprieve
The 64-year-old Sheraton Townhouse hotel was granted a six-month reprieve from possible demolition in a unanimous Los Angeles City Council action.
The Japanese hotel chain that owns the Wilshire Boulevard hotel, which closed in February, wants to raze it and hold the property vacant for several years before building another project there.
But a developer, Thomas Safran & Associates, is seeking to convert the hotel to affordable housing and convinced the council to give it more time to negotiate the building’s purchase or lease.
“We have a historic building that deserves preservation,” Councilwoman Rita Walters said. “We have critical needs in the community that this building can serve.”
The council’s 14-0 vote to delay demolition is the second such action. Council members voted in April to delay the 13-story hotel’s destruction until Oct. 31.
