Jolypha, who was third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, suffered a career-ending injury while training at Hollywood Park and won’t run in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff next Saturday at Santa Anita.

Jolypha, a 4-year-old filly, was galloping at Hollywood on Thursday when she suffered a cracked bone near her right front ankle.

“They didn’t need an ambulance, and she was able to walk back to the barn,” trainer Bobby Frankel said. “It’s a shame, but it’s a good thing that it happened while she was galloping. If it had happened in a race, it might have been all over.”

Frankel moved Jolypha and his other Breeders’ Cup horses, including probable Classic favorite Bertrando, to Hollywood Park because of heavy smoke at Santa Anita from the fires in nearby Altadena. Racing was canceled Thursday at Santa Anita because of the smoke.

Jolypha, who is owned by Juddmonte Farms, will be shipped to Kentucky in a few weeks and be bred early next year. Her career began in France, and after the third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Gulfstream Park last October, she was turned over to Frankel in California. Frankel thought she might be the best horse he ever had, but Jolypha won only an allowance in her four starts in California.

Frankel didn’t begin her 1993 campaign until May. “I learned a lesson out of all this,” Frankel said. “I learned that you should keep running horses when they’re good.”

Jolypha finished with four victories in 10 races and earnings of $981,918.

Another Breeders’ Cup Distaff probable, Party Cited, kicked herself in the right hind leg in her stall at Santa Anita on Friday, but there is still a good chance she will run.

“It looks like soft-tissue damage,” said Terry Mangrum, an assistant to trainer Rodney Rash. “We plan to go back to the track with her (today).”

The loss of Jolypha drops the Distaff field to nine. The favorites will be Hollywood Wildcat, Sky Beauty and Paseana, who won the race last year.
