Two Differing Views of Article on Soka

Share

* I am at a loss to understand why you would print such a schoolboyish article on the Soka Corp., which runs a language school here in Las Virgenes (Oct. 14).

Soka uses the time-worn tactic of money giveaway ($180,000 to Las Virgenes schools), mom and apple pie (donated replicas of the Liberty Bell to Boston schools).

Soka takes in billions of dollars per year. The public officials who are willing to oppose Soka should be commended.

* It was so refreshing to read such a fair and accurate article about Soka University in The Times by Doug Smith (Oct. 14).

He captured the essence. Soka University is trying in court to win the hearts and minds of its neighbors and to establish a world-class university.

The human rights lecture series is diverse and informative. I have enjoyed every one and I feel they are a real asset to our community. Go early. Take a stroll. Experience this enchanted spot before the lecture.

Or, better yet, take one of the tours the university has to offer: historical, nature walks or bird-watching tours.

Then you decide: university (this site has been an institute of higher learning for the last 40 years and retained its beauty) or park headquarters (full of concession stands and projected tens of thousands of visitors).
