HOW DARK AND STORMY WAS IT? : ‘Screams From Upstairs’

Clark Allen, 13, of Redondo Beach, is an eighth grader at Manhattan Beach Intermediate School. He has a sister, Claire, 12, who has two friends named--you guessed it--Jody and Jennings

It was a stormy Halloween night and the full moon was partially covered by clouds. Three girls, named Claire, Jody and Jennings, were having a big Halloween sleep-over party.

Claire’s mother came down the stairs, stopped at the bottom and said, “Claire, I’m going to an office party. Now you and your friends behave yourselves.”

Claire replied, “OK, Mom.”

When her mother had left, Claire asked Jody and Jennings what they wanted to do.

“Let’s use the Ouija board,” Jody said. Claire and Jennings agreed that was a good idea, so Claire went to her room to get it.

When she got back, the three girls made a space on the table for it. They opened it up and followed the directions, then they tried to reach a spirit. They asked questions and it answered them perfectly. Then the spirit asked, “Can I come in?”

The girls really weren’t taking this thing seriously, so they answered yes.

Nothing happened after that so the girls got bored and put the Ouija board up.

Claire turned on the television and called a friend to see what they were doing. Claire and her friend got into a long conversation. Then the phone went dead and the lights began flashing on and off.

Jody, Jennings and Claire were screaming by now and they ran for the front door. It seemed as if something or someone was holding the door shut so they couldn’t get out. So they ran to the back door and the back door was the same.

Just then the three girls heard screams that weren’t theirs and they heard some other noises. They looked around and saw stuff floating around and stuff being knocked off the shelves. The house was all cluttered with books, paper and everything else that was once on a shelf.

After the stuff had stopped being thrown around, Jody disappeared. Claire and Jennings were running around the house searching for Jody. Then Jennings disappeared.

Claire didn’t realize Jennings had disappeared until she turned around and saw that nobody was next to her.

She yelled for Jody and Jennings but didn’t hear a reply. After about five minutes of yelling, Claire heard something. It sounded like screams.

Claire followed the screams all the way up to the attic. She stopped at the attic stairway and looked up. She didn’t see anything so she decided to go up the stairs and take a closer look.

When she got up the stairs, she saw Jennings sitting by a ghost. Jennings was screaming and so was the ghost. In front of them, she saw an eight-foot monster. He had three eyes, razor-sharp teeth and he was covered by spikes coming from his back.

When he looked up and noticed Claire, he said in a very deep voice, “Enter. I’ve been waiting for you, Claire.”

He extended his wand and shot out a long stream of blue dust. It took control over Claire’s body and made her sit on the chair right beside Jennings.

Claire said to the monster, “What have you done with Jody?” He replied, “She’s sitting on the other side of Jennings.” Claire looked over and said in a quiet voice, “Jody?”

Then the monster said, “As you can see, I turned her into a ghost and I plan to do the same with you and your friend Jennings.”

Jennings was screaming and Claire tried to calm her down and then she asked, “But why us three?”

And the monster said, “By midnight I must turn at least three girls into ghosts or I will never be able to enter through the next dimension and will get a cruel punishment.”

Claire asked, “What punishment?”

The monster replied, “I’ll be turned into a human and remain a human for the rest of my life.”

Then the monster said, “Now then, enough small talk. It’s time to get down to business.”

He then raised his wand to Jennings and almost instantly she was turned into a ghost.

Then the monster said, “Now it’s your turn, young lady.” He raised his wand and Claire screamed, “No!”

After that everything went blank. Claire then woke up in her own bed, the house was clean and there was no sign of that monster. She got up and said, “Must have been a dream.”

And she went to brush her teeth. She began brushing her teeth. Then she turned around to the mirror and screamed at what she saw. She saw the toothbrush in the mirror, but she didn’t see herself.
