NHL ROUNDUP : Neutral Site No Problem as Rangers Beat Devils, 4-1

Mike Gartner scored two goals and set up Sergei Nemchinov’s tiebreaking goal in the second period as the New York Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils, 4-1, Sunday night at Halifax, Canada.

Gartner scored a power-play goal at 3:53 of the first period, then assisted on Nemchinov’s power-play goal at 2:12 of the second to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.

New York, the designated home team in the neutral-site game, added two third-period goals by Nemchinov and Gartner, his eighth of the season.

The Rangers outshot the Devils, 37-24, in winning their second game of the weekend. They won, 4-1, at Hartford on Saturday night.

The Devils, who started out the season with seven consecutive victories, lost for only the second time in 10 games.

The win improved New York’s record to 7-5-1 and moved the Rangers to within a point of the Devils in the Atlantic Division.

Philadelphia 9, Chicago 6--Kevin Dineen scored four goals and had an assist and linemate Rod Brind’Amour had a goal and four assists to lead the Flyers at Chicago.

Dineen, with nine career hat tricks, broke a 6-6 tie at 5:41 of the third period when he beat Ed Belfour with a close shot from in front for his third goal of the game.

Calgary 4, Winnipeg 3--Paul Ranheim scored on a penalty shot at 6:46 of the third period, his second goal of the game, to give the Flames the victory at Winnipeg.
