Teachers Strike Ends With Issues Unresolved

An 11-day strike in the ABC Unified School District was expected to end today as teachers return to their classrooms without winning any concessions.

ABC Federation of Teachers and Supt. Larry Lucas signed an agreement Monday night calling for an end to the strike in the district that serves Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and parts of surrounding communities.

Both sides agreed there would be no reprisals against teachers who participated in the strike or those who crossed picket lines.

Deputy Supt. Ira Toibin said the agreement did not address any of the issues that prompted the strike, including a proposed cut in teachers’ pay and increases in class sizes.

School board members were polled by the superintendent and a majority approved the agreement, Toibin said.

About half of the union’s 973 members walked off the job Oct. 22 after backing away from a tentative contract that cut salaries 1.5%. The deal unraveled after teachers learned that the district had about $1.8 million more than originally estimated. Administrators say the money is committed to other areas.
