Mississippi Chancellor Gerald Turner took himself out of the running for head of the NCAA.

Turner interviewed Monday in Kansas City, Mo., with the NCAA executive committee and the Presidents Commission about the NCAA executive director vacancy. He also talked with outgoing executive director Dick Schultz.

A judge asked that the French National Assembly lift parliamentary immunity for Bernard Tapie and clear the way to charge the owner of the disgraced Olympique Marseille soccer team.

Under French law, Tapie, a member of the assembly and owner of the embattled club, cannot be charged with ordinary crimes while Parliament is in session.

A preliminary report found no obvious cause of a stampede that left dozens injured after Wisconsin’s football victory over Michigan, said the school’s chancellor, David Ward.

Damage at the stadium was repaired Tuesday while school officials met to discuss how to prevent a repeat of the incident when the Badgers play host to Ohio State on Saturday.

Grand Canyon University, an NCAA Division II school, will leave the Pacific West Conference to join the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. in 1994-95, the school said.

The conference now consists of Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Riverside.
