LADERA HEIGHTS : Day-Laborer Vote Delayed for Month

Share

A vote by the County Board of Supervisors on a proposal to ban day laborers was postponed last week until Dec. 2 to allow more time for mediation efforts between residents and laborers.

The measure, which would prohibit day laborers from seeking work on public rights of way and in privately owned parking lots, was authored by Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. The ordinance would apply to unincorporated county areas, but was largely spurred by homeowner groups in Ladera Heights. Residents there have complained that day laborers create disturbances.

Burke spokeswoman Vicki Pipkin said the delay was to allow more time for laborers and residents to work with attorneys from the Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights of Los Angeles.

Ronni Cooper, president of the Ladera Heights Civic Assn., said she doesn’t see a quick or easy resolution. “The laborers would be satisfied if they can stay, and residents will be satisfied if they go,” she said. “There’s really no middle ground here.”
