Forget the skimpy swimsuits when candidates for Miss Cambodia come down the aisle. Judges say the winner of today’s pageant will be demure and domestic.

The pageant--Cambodia’s first in two decades--is seen as another sign of the country’s recovery from years of war and upheaval. But some say the contest’s standards are too old-fashioned.

Contestants will be judged on how well they perform traditional Cambodian dances and model a royal costume, a classical evening dress, a modern evening dress and a wraparound sarong, considered the Cambodian bathing suit.

They will also face questions such as how to prepare Cambodian sour soup or what color dress should be worn to the temple on Sundays.
