Caltrans District 12’s landscape architecture branch recently earned top honors in the water management category for California’s 1993 Director’s Water Conservation awards for reducing the amount of drinking water used for landscape irrigation.

“Our goal is to be the leader in conserving drinking water in the community,” said Sandy Ankhasirisan, chief of the Orange County district’s Landscape Architecture Branch.

In coordination with Orange County Water District’s “Green Acres” project and the Irvine Ranch Water District, Caltrans was able to conserve 31,663,600 gallons of potable water for a savings of $34,000.

The Irvine Ranch project will save 52,144,000 gallons of water, a savings of $43,000 in water costs.

According to the Santa Ana Water Resource Department, the amount of water recycled from these projects annually by Caltrans is equal to the amount used by 978 households each year.

Seven water conservation projects are currently planned in Orange County. Two projects are already underway.
