A weeklong conference of the Pacific Rim’s fledgling economic organization, called Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), opens Sunday in Washington’s capitol.
APEC’s 15 members include the nations of East Asia, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, and the large countries that are their neighbors and trading partners across the seas--the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
From Sunday through Tuesday, senior officials of the APEC countries will meet to discuss practical issues such as customs procedures. Following that, foreign ministers and trade ministers from the 15 nations will hold their fifth annual meeting before President Clinton hosts the first-ever APEC summit Nov. 19-20.
