Aggrieved Garment Workers Receive $188,000: Nineteen Los Angeles garment workers who won a landmark 1992 court judgment after being illegally denied minimum wages and overtime pay are receiving reimbursement payments totaling $188,000 from a special state fund. The 19 Latino workers won a judgment of $805,676 against their former employers in one of the biggest back-pay awards ever in the abuse-plagued garment industry. However, the workers failed to collect any of the award because their former employers could not be located. As a result, they qualified for partial reimbursements from a special garment workers account administered by the California Department of Industrial Relations. For the individual workers, the state payments ranged from about $4,800 to $19,100.
