BRUSH OFF: The job facing some state and county park officials in the wake of last month’s fires is a daunting one (E1), but rangers at Crystal Cove State Park can take at least one task off their “to do” list. The park had a controlled burn tentatively planned for December, but now that can be put off at least until the end of the century, rangers say. . . . A hugely popular mountain biking spot, the backcountry area of Crystal Cove was almost completely burned and will remain closed indefinitely.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Roseanne Arnold and husband Tom gained media attention for their recent weight losses. But on Dec. 5, they’ll head to Santa Ana’s Planet Hollywood (E2) for an auction and an eating contest, to raise funds for their foundation for victims of sexual abuse. . . . For Roseanne’s birthday last week, Planet Hollywood President Robert Earl sent her 50 chocolate cakes. Says Earl: “She called, told me she’d eaten them all and was on her way to dinner.”

MORE PARADISE: The Irvine Co. threw a luncheon bash to debut its anxiously awaited Pelican Hill 18-hole Links course south of Corona del Mar on Tuesday. Among the guests: golf architect Tom Fazio, who designed it, as well as its adjoining Ocean course. “I think the golfers are going to find the Links mesmerizing,” says Fazio. “There’s an ocean view everywhere you turn.” . . . The public can play starting Monday. The cost: $95 Monday through Thursday, and $125 for the long weekend and holidays.

CAMPUS HARASSMENT: The U.S. Supreme Court’s tough stance Tuesday on sexual harassment in the workplace (A1) is “heartening” to UC Irvine’s Jon Wiener. The history professor has an article in Nation magazine this month about a Tulane University sex-and-the-professor controversy. . . . “The abuse of power is always a problem, and sexual abuse of power by professors has become a more evident problem,” he says, especially since colleges prefer to settle such claims in private.
