* Thank you for the courage your reporter Michael Granberry displayed in his article “Harsh Fates Await Four-Legged Homeless” (Oct. 21).

The question posed by San Diego animal protectionist Jane Cartmill about the eagerness to accept euthanasia as a solution to the increasing number of surplus animals is one this organization has been railing against for four decades.

Euthanasia is not the solution. Curtailment of breeding is the solution. Early spay and neuter, access to low-cost sterilization, reopening the City Department of Animal Regulation spay/neuter clinics, massive education and realistic legislation are the multilevel solutions.
