A year ago, Patricia Lynch of San Pedro adopted a greyhound, named Go For It, that had reached the end of its racing career. She changed the dog’s name to Willow.

“I thought she was beautiful and graceful, like a willow tree,” Lynch said.

On Saturday, Lynch and about 10 other greyhound owners will appear with their dogs in Torrance at “Show ‘n Tell,” a promotion for Greyhound Pets of America, an organization that finds new homes for greyhounds that are no longer competitive on the racetrack.

The average greyhound has a three-year racing career, and many of the dogs are killed once their careers are over. Unlike other adoption agencies, Greyhound Pets of America does not try to close racetracks, said Steve Carle, the group’s placement representative for Los Angeles County.

“We’re not out to make a political statement,” Carle said. “Our main goal is to find as many good, loving homes for as many dogs as we can.”

Carle, who has adopted two greyhounds said that because the greyhound is not a common breed, misinformation about the dogs abounds. For example, Greyhounds are not hyperactive and do not need lots of exercise, he said. They are house dogs that thrive on human companionship.

“Even the dogs that are grossly mistreated still respond and love humans,” Carle said. “They still greet you with a wagging tail no matter what’s happened to them.”
