SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Huntington Beach got four first-half touchdowns from Tony Gonzalez and knocked off Marina, 42-12, in the Sunset League finale Friday night at Sheue Field.

The Oilers (10-0, 7-0) set a school record for victories in a season. The last time a Huntington Beach team finished the regular season with a perfect record was in 1924, when they finished 2-0.

The Oilers put the game away early, scoring on their first four possessions and adding a Chris Yadrick interception return for a touchdown to take a 35-0 lead with 8 minutes 11 seconds left in the first half. Gonzalez, who announced this week that he will attend California, caught touchdown passes of three, 28, five and five yards in the first 1 1/2 quarters, and finished with seven catches for 115 yards.

Seniors Justin Flagg and Levi Schuck also had solid nights for the Oilers. Flagg carried 14 times for 83 yards, 75 of those in the opening quarter. Schuck completed 11 of 17 passes for 159 yards, including four scoring passes to Gonzalez.

Marina (5-5, 4-3), which still has a chance for a wild-card berth, showed a lot of heart in the second half. While Huntington Beach had its starters in nearly the entire game, the Vikings allowed the hosts to cross midfield only once in the second half.

Huntington Beach, ranked second in the county and in Division II behind Los Alamitos, will open the playoffs next Friday at home. Pairings will be announced Sunday.
