SOUTH GATE : Youth Commission Gets Special Award

Share

The Commission for South Gate Youth has been awarded a 1993 Special Achievement Award by the California Healthy Cities project. The volunteer commission, founded in 1989, is credited with helping reduce gangs and juvenile arrests in the city and with spurring an increase in school attendance, among other achievements.

The California Healthy Cities project, a training and technical assistance program conducted by the state Department of Health Services and the Western Consortium for Public Health, selected programs from South Gate and four other cities from 40 entries statewide.

“We define health in a very broad way,” said Carol Pepper-Kittredge, spokeswoman for California Healthy Cities. “A lot of cities are doing things that make them a healthier place in terms of social, economic and safety factors.”

Anaheim, Chula Vista, Highland and South Lake Tahoe also won awards. The winners were selected for their commitment to innovation, community leadership and collaboration, and for the impact of the program, officials said.

Officials of the California Healthy Cities project will present the award at the Nov. 23 City Council meeting.
