Alhambra : Freeway Ruling Appealed

Share

Caltrans and the city of Alhambra have appealed a Sacramento Superior Court judge’s ruling requiring the state to get South Pasadena’s approval to extend the Long Beach Freeway.

In September, Judge Earl Warren Jr. declared that 1982 legislation allowing Caltrans to build the 6.2-mile freeway through South Pasadena without the city’s approval had expired.

South Pasadena officials have consistently said they will never give permission for the freeway. It is one of four cities on the proposed route between the San Bernardino and Foothill freeways. Pasadena, Alhambra and Los Angeles have agreed to the extension.

In this battle, which has lasted four decades, South Pasadena officials have maintained the freeway would tear the community in half and destroy historic neighborhoods, whereas Alhambra maintains that the freeway will unclog traffic on its streets.
