MAKING THE GRADE: More and more, teen-agers are getting an early start on university life, taking advanced placement exams to earn college credit while still in high school. The subjects go well beyond such standards as English and history. There’s computer science, psychology and Latin, to name a few. . . . For local AP test scores, from Lancaster to Glendale, see Valley Briefing (B2).

MURDER MYSTERY: For three years the slaying of Ron Baker, a 21-year-old UCLA astrophysics major, remained a mystery. Stabbed 18 times, Baker’s body was found in a railroad tunnel at a Chatsworth park. . . . Now police say they have his killer--his former roommate from Van Nuys (B1). The roommate’s lawyer says the charges should be dismissed for lack of evidence.

FAREWELL ‘FONZ’: Longtime Valley resident Henry Winkler is heading for Bel-Air. Winkler, best known for his role on TV’s “Happy Days,” has sold his 6,700-square-foot Toluca Lake home for about $2.26 million, records show. . . . The buyer? Actor Andy Garcia. For other Hot Properties, see Real Estate (K1).

SAD MEMORIES: The sagas of River Phoenix, dead of an overdose, and Michael Jackson, confessing he’s addicted to pain killers, stir the memories of show biz folks who recall when Fatty Arbuckle or Charlie Chaplin made scandals of their own. . . . Over at the Motion Picture and Television Fund retirement community in Woodland Hills, old actors observed that fame and infamy often go hand in hand (B4).

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL: It was supposed to be a Chumash Indian ceremony to bless the earth after the devastating fires. But when the invited Chumash Master of Fire didn’t show, about two dozen people who gathered in Topanga improvised their own ceremony--a unique mix of American Indian and Quaker traditions--to pay homage to the earth and pray for its renewal (B1).
