SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : In Surprise Move, Katz to Run Again for Assembly

Share

State Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar) announced Monday that he will seek reelection to the Assembly next year, a surprising move that will apparently avoid a bloody Democratic primary fight for the seat being vacated by state Sen. David A. Roberti (D-Van Nuys).

The decision appears to signal an end to Katz’s state legislative career because term limits will force him to leave the Assembly after his next term, when Roberti’s Senate seat will not be on the ballot. But Katz has not ruled out running for other offices, including seats on the Los Angeles City Council and County Board of Supervisors.

Katz’s decision appears to leave his colleague, Assemblywoman Barbara Friedman (D-North Hollywood), who represents the 40th Assembly District, with a clearer field if she mounts a bid to succeed Roberti, who has announced that he will run for state treasurer next year.

“I’m looking very favorably at running for the Roberti seat,” Friedman said Monday.
