Winning Designs: Three architectural teams have been named as having the best designs for an affordable housing project on three acres of vacant land in the Santa Ana Heights Redevelopment project area. Out of 21 designs received, Orange County officials Tuesday announced three winning designs for two-story apartment projects: the team of W.F.A. Architecture/Planning of Newport Beach and Akins Development Co. in Irvine, which together designed a 60-unit building with a recreational area; L.C. Major & Associates Inc. of Santa Ana, which designed a 71-unit project; and Studio E. Architects of San Diego, which submitted plans for a 70-unit building. The three winners get a $5,000 planning grant to cover costs, and must add a developer and property manager to their team and then submit a final proposal to the county. The winner of that round is likely to win a county contract to build the housing complex.
