Restructuring the School District

The Los Angeles Unified School District has embarked on a restructuring plan that will decentralize its offices and form community clusters of high schools and their feeder campuses. Task forces have been organized around specific issues raised by the reform plan. The public is invited to attend the following meetings:

* Facilities: Will determine the resources and locations available to accommodate new cluster staff; 4 p.m. Thursday, district headquarters, H-163, 450 N. Grand Ave.

* Business services: Will decide the kinds of budgeting support and financial advice that will be needed by school clusters; 4 p.m. Thursday, Rosemont Avenue School; 421 N. Rosemont Ave.

* Parental involvement: Will define how parents can become more active in school and district activities; 8:30 a.m. Saturday, district headquarters, Room H-160, 450 N. Grand Ave.

* Best practices: Will compile model education programs that can be used in schools; 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29; district headquarters, cafeteria, Room C-2, 450 N. Grand Ave.

* Customer services: Will determine the types of school-related information and support that should be provided to outside groups and the public; 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, district headquarters, cafeteria, Room C-2.

* Student/staff support services: Will identify services that should be provided to school clusters, including psychological and nursing aid, college counseling, and dropout prevention; 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, district headquarters, cafeteria, Room C-2, 450 N. Grand Ave.

* School instruction: Will examine how education programs can better ensure student achievement, including discussion of testing, bilingual education and graduation requirements; 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, Downtown Business Magnet, 1081 W. Temple St.

* Special education: Will recommend how to deliver services to students with learning and physical disabilities; 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, Lanterman School, 2328 St. James Place.
