Whittier : Los Nietos School Board to Decide How to Fill Seat

Trustees for the Los Nietos School District will decide next week whether to appoint a replacement for a departing board member or hold a special election, an official said Wednesday.

Adeline Rocha, who has been on the board 14 years, will leave to fill a seat on the Whittier Union High School District board, which she won in the Nov. 2 election.

Los Nietos Supt. Chuck Menzies said he has recommended that the board appoint Rocha’s successor to avoid a special election, which would cost at least $15,000. The school board is scheduled to act on his recommendation Tuesday.

After Rocha officially resigns, the school board has 60 days to decide how to fill her seat for the final two years of her four-year term.

The Los Nietos school system serves elementary and middle school students in the West Whittier and Santa Fe Springs area. The Whittier Union district operates high schools that serve the Whittier area, Santa Fe Springs and part of Norwalk.

Rocha is the first Santa Fe Springs resident to be elected to the high school district board in at least 15 years, Whittier Union Supt. Lee Eastwood said.
