The Commission for South Gate Youth has received a Special Achievement Award from the California Healthy Cities project. The volunteer organization, founded in 1989, is credited with helping to reduce gang activity and juvenile arrests in the city and with spurring an increase in school attendance.

The California Healthy Cities project, a training and technical assistance program of the state Department of Health Services and the Western Consortium for Public Health, selected programs from South Gate and four other cities from 40 entries statewide.

Anaheim, Chula Vista, Highland and South Lake Tahoe also won awards. The winners were selected for their innovation, community leadership and collaboration, and for the impact of their program, officials said.
