Long Beach : Council Supports Barrier on Paramount Boulevard
- Share via
The City Council on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to closing Paramount Boulevard at Long Beach’s northern border to stop the heavy flow of commuter traffic that leaves the San Gabriel River Freeway (605) in Hawaiian Gardens.
The council is expected to give final approval in two weeks to the barrier, which will remain in place for a year. The council will then decide whether the road should be blocked permanently.

Street closure--The Long Beach City Council gave preliminary approval last week to closing Pioneer Boulevard for a one-year trial. The Nov. 18 issue of the Long Beach/Southeast section of The Times incorrectly reported the name of the street.
Residents of the upscale El Dorado Park Estates have called for the closure for years, complaining that too much traffic passes through their neighborhood from Hawaiian Gardens. They also blamed the adjacent, working-class town for burglaries and graffiti in their neighborhood.
Hawaiian Gardens officials have objected to the closure as exclusionary.
The traffic barrier can be opened to allow emergency vehicles to pass.
