ETHICALLY CORRECT: A drive-by shooting near Woodbridge High School in Irvine last year served as “our wake-up call,” says its principal, Greg Cops. School officials decided that students should concentrate more on ethical issues. . . . They sent three teachers to ethics seminars at the Michael Josephson Institute in Marina del Rey last summer so they could incorporate the subject in social science classes. Wednesday, the NBC-TV show “Crusaders” is on campus, for a piece about how Josephson’s ideas--he’ll be there too--are being transferred to the classroom.

HEAD PRO: Jean Kawahara gave up private practice to become an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles five years ago because she wanted a chance for more trial work. She got it. She’s done a flurry of court cases since, specializing in white-collar crime. . . . Now Kawahara has been named to run the U.S. attorney’s office in Santa Ana, pending Washington approval. “I know many of the people already working there,” she says. “They’re highly professional. I’m delighted to join them.”

RACE IS ON: If wine is one of your life’s requirements, you know that today is the third Thursday of November, which means the arrival of the Beaujolais Noveau, the young wines from France. Many of the top-ranked restaurants in town are celebrating with a “waiter’s race” at 3 p.m. today at the Le Meridien Hotel in Newport Beach: One race for real waiters, and another for dining room owners/managers. The winners are those who serve the wine and dinner in the best time. Prizes: Dinner for two.
