Los Angeles County Board of Education member Barbara Pieper was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson on Friday as director of the California Arts Council.

Pieper, a former mayor of La Canada Flintridge who was defeated by Bill Hoge in a hotly contested race for an Assembly seat in 1992, will replace Joanne Kozberg, who was recently named secretary of state and consumer services.

Wilson said Pieper was chosen for the $79,956-a-year job because of her “strong and well-rounded background in education, government and arts.”

The seven-member county Board of Education oversees programs and services to the county’s 94 school districts and serves as the governing body for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, which offers training in music, visual arts and theater.
