Justice Lucas Seeks Ruling on Trips
California Supreme Court Chief Justice Malcolm Lucas asked the Commission on Judicial Performance on Friday to review whether his frequent out-of-town trips are improper.
Lucas asked for the review in response to a San Francisco Chronicle article that said Lucas had spent 53 working days out of the state in 1992 and accepted trips to overseas conferences paid by insurance industry groups that have had petitions before the court.
“It is in the best interest of our state and our judicial system that any questions hovering over my performance be dispelled as expeditiously and thoroughly as possible,” Lucas wrote.
The Commission on Judicial Performance is a state watchdog agency that looks into complaints of misconduct involving the state judiciary.
Lucas was out of town Friday on official government business, a spokeswoman said.
