CRENSHAW : Foes of Judge Karlin Short of Signatures
- Share via
In its second effort in as many years, the Latasha Harlins Justice Committee again failed to recall Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joyce Karlin when members were unable to garner enough signatures to put the measure on next spring’s ballot.
The Crenshaw-based committee failed to submit a petition containing the signatures of 266,000 registered Los Angeles County voters by the Nov. 4 deadline, according to Marcia Ventura of the Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office.
In a ruling two years ago, Karlin fined grocer Soon Ja Du, 51, $500 and sentenced her to 400 hours of community service and probation for fatally shooting Latasha Harlins, 15, in a South Los Angeles market during a scuffle over a bottle of orange juice.
Latasha’s aunt, Denise Harlins, and her supporters have fought to overturn the ruling and recall Karlin, who was narrowly reelected to a six-year term last year.
Harlins had no comment on the failed recall effort. Karlin, who has since been transferred to Juvenile Court, also had no comment.
