LAGUNA BEACH : School District Drive Hits $2-Million Mark

Share

The Laguna Beach Unified School District has reached the $2-million mark in its continuing drive to raise funds for rehabilitating school facilities and improving instructional programs.

And, despite the devastation to the community from the Oct. 27 fire, the campaign is continuing toward its $3-million goal, said its director, Cindy Prewitt.

More than 300 families and other donors have contributed to the two-year-old drive, Prewitt said. After reaching $1 million in September, 1992, the campaign continued to target major donors while expanding in the past year to seek support from the greater community, she said.

Among other things, residents have contributed by buying tiles and bricks for the district’s new pool and seats for the soon-to-be renovated Artists’ Theatre at Laguna Beach High School.

Prewitt said the campaign’s main focus now is renovating the Artists’ Theatre. Construction is about to begin on the facility, which is intended to serve students’ and the community’s needs for the performing arts, lecture and film series, and other events.

“Initially, we thought we should just cancel” the remainder of the campaign after the fire hit, Prewitt said.

“But then we thought what this town needs and would really rally behind is the idea of a town theater,” she said.
