A 29-year-old Costa Mesa man was killed and a friend was critically injured Saturday when their car collided with a pickup truck.

Police did not have the names of the victims Sunday, Sgt. Lee Pepka said.

The accident occurred about 9:20 p.m. in front of the Islands Restaurant at 18621 Brookhurst St., south of Ellis Street.

Pepka said the victims were in a mid-size car traveling north on Brookhurst. Opposite the entrance to the restaurant parking lot, the driver attempted a left turn into the driveway, he said.

The car was struck as it “crossed the path of the pickup truck,” which was heading south on Brookhurst.

The passenger in the car was taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, where he died, Pepka said. The driver, a 26-year-old Huntington Beach man, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday, Pepka said.

The driver of the pickup truck received minor injuries, police said.
