3 Americans Accused in Thai Heroin Cases
Three Americans have been charged with heroin trafficking after one was detained at the international airport and two others were arrested in their Bangkok hotel room, Thai police said Sunday.
New Yorker Alvin Torres, 33, was held late Saturday as he was about to board a Thai Airways International flight to Copenhagen.
Police said customs officials found four pressed bars of heroin weighing 20.3 pounds hidden in a briefcase.
Local media reported in a separate case that two other Americans, Kevin Scott Carter and Patricia Lee Jacobo, both 35, from Honolulu, were also held on Saturday with 1.5 pounds of heroin in their possession.
All three face the death penalty if found guilty, though Thai courts traditionally reduce the sentence to life imprisonment.
