GARDEN GROVE : Pioneer Park to Get Roller Hockey Rink

Share

The City Council has approved a $400,000 renovation plan for Pioneer Park that includes an outdoor roller hockey rink that should be ready for competitions next summer.

The renovation will also involve new restrooms, picnic facilities, playground equipment and walls to separate the four-acre park from nearby residences.

Pioneer Park has been a gathering place for homeless people, and neighboring residents and business people have complained to the city about it, officials said.

However, the intention of the upgrading is not to displace the homeless but rather to improve facilities and programs so that more people will use the park for recreation, city officials say.

“A public park is not appropriate for overnight camping,” Councilman Mark Leyes said. The work “will help to get the park back to its primary use.”

Work will start shortly after Jan. 1 and is expected to be completed before the start of summer.

The park is at 12722 Chapman Ave., next to Earl Warren Elementary School.--ROBERT BARKER
