BURBANK : Lockheed to Give 4.8-Acre Park to City

The Lockheed Corp. has agreed to give Burbank a 4.8-acre park that the city has been eyeing since the company announced that it was leaving town three years ago.

“This will be ideal for large groups to use,” Burbank Parks and Recreation Director Mary Alvord said.

The Robert Gross Park, named for a former head of Lockheed, has two softball fields, a picnic area with 80 tables, a building with classroom and restroom facilities, a basketball court, a jogging path and 77 parking spaces.

The park has been shut down by Lockheed since last spring but could be open in early December. It will probably be the only city park at which alcohol will be permitted, Alvord said.

Drinking might be allowed because the new park won’t be as close to residential neighborhoods as other city parks. Most of the structures around the park are commercial buildings or apartments.

The city is also planning to upgrade the park, improving the irrigation system for the ball fields, installing a sand volleyball pit and replacing the playground equipment.

The new park would also serve approximately the same neighborhood as the Robert E. Lundigam Park, next to Fire Station 13 on Thornton Street, Alvord said.
