From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Senate asked a federal court to enforce a subpoena for Sen. Bob Packwood’s diaries on grounds that the Republican lawmaker from Oregon withheld them from the Ethics Committee because he feared new information might be discovered. The committee’s investigation of alleged sexual misconduct and intimidation of witnesses by Packwood had stalled briefly last week while he contemplated resignation. But he decided to stay in office and fight the allegations. Packwood has argued that the subpoena would violate his right to privacy.
