Fiat Announces Layoffs: The Italian auto maker, one of the few in Europe that has so far steered clear of heavy layoffs, plans to cut about 5,000 jobs in 1994 because of the crisis in the car market, union officials said. A company spokesman confirmed the layoffs and said officials will meet with the employee union. Fiat, Italy’s largest private company, was also scheduled to meet today with Minister of Labor Gino Giugni to present a three-year strategic plan, including a proposal to trim its work force.
